A resolution to exclude Iran from a UN Women’s Council has been passed. The United States proposed to exclude Iran from this council due to the suppression of ongoing protests.

The 54 member states of the United Nations Economic and Social Council voted to exclude Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women, accusing Iran of violating women’s rights. The proposal was passed by 29 votes. However, 16 countries did not vote for or against the proposal.

United States Ambassador to the United Nations Thomas Greenfield said that the United Nations member states have agreed to remove Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women. He also said that women and rights activists in Iran asked us to bring this proposal.

The Iranian government has expressed disappointment due to this decision. Protests spread in Iran after the death of a 22-year-old woman in police custody.
